Posted Aug. 25, 2014 | In a joint blog post, the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) and U.S. Department of Education’s (ED) Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education (OCTAE) announced an opportunity for the public to inform the discussion surrounding the implementation of Title II and Title IV (i.e., of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), which became effective July 22, 2014. Specifically, OSERS and OCTAE seek comments to assist the agencies as they begin the process of implementing the amendments to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that were made by Title IV of WIOA and of the new version of the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (included in Title II). WIOA is intended to maximize opportunities for youth and adults, with and without disabilities, to succeed in postsecondary education and in high-skill, high-wage and high-demand jobs in the 21st century economy.
Comments will be accepted by email to rsa.WIOA@ed.gov through 5:00pm Eastern on September 12. Comments can be submitted also on the blog through August 29. (Note: Submitting comments is voluntary and subject to ED blog comment policies.)
In addition, the Department of Labor has launched a WIOA resource page that includes summaries of the law and key implementation dates. DOL soon will begin writing regulations to implement the new law, and has just announced a series of webinars to engage the public around the regulations’ development. The August 26 (tomorrow) and September 2 webinars are related specifically to services for those with disabilities.
