Many hundreds of people with disabilities and their allies commemorated Disability Pride Week by attending Philadelphia’s 8th annual Disability Pride Parade June 15.
The cost of nursing homes in the U.S. can easily top $70,000 a year and has risen even faster than that of overall medical care in some states, a Georgetown University Medical Center study found. New York nursing homes were the most expensive, averaging more than $300 a day, while Texas had the most affordable facilities.
On Tuesday, a day before the first Democratic debates, every presidential candidate (including the Republican one) was called out by the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired for having an inaccessible campaign site, just months after Politico put the candidates on blast for shoddy Spanish translation sites. Blind and low-vision users, along with disabled people who have certain other impairments like seizure disorders and cognitive disabilities — as well as those who are deaf and hard of hearing — can’t actually use the candidates’ websites. It’s just the first in a series of obstacles disabled communities face when trying to make informed voting decisions, even though these groups have an especially vested interest in politics.
Fairfax County launched the event to bring about a more inclusive environment for the disability community.
After caring for her husband for 12 years before he passed away, 86-year-old Joyce Bigelow became homeless and moved into her truck. Her Kaiser Permanente care team connected her with housing and community resources. According to psychologist Sarla Tolta, Pro Care, Wellness and Lifestyle Centre, Kolkata, “Depression and anxiety give obsessive negative thought patterns and you start to worry about unnecessary things.”
